Reduce Energy Costs by 33% with Smart Building Retrofits
Upgrade outdated heating systems into high-efficiency, low-emission solutions without major disruption to your building.

A multi-residential retirement community in Brampton, Ontario faced rising energy costs and outdated infrastructure. Built in the early 1980s, the 6-storey building relied on electric baseboard heating and lacked a centralized cooling system—resulting in high electricity usage and limited comfort for residents.
Electricity accounted for the majority of the building’s energy consumption, with inefficient systems operating at a low performance level. Without a modern solution, operational costs were expected to continue increasing while resident comfort remained inconsistent.
Mann Engineering conducted a detailed energy audit and designed a targeted retrofit using a ducted mini-split Air Source Heat Pump system. The new system introduced ceiling-concealed indoor units and balcony-mounted outdoor condensers, allowing for efficient installation with minimal disruption to residents.
Unlike traditional electric heating, the upgraded system operates at a significantly higher efficiency, delivering both heating and cooling through a single integrated solution. This not only improved energy performance but also enhanced year-round indoor comfort across all suites.
The results were immediate and measurable. The building achieved a 33% reduction in electricity consumption and approximately $31,700 in annual utility savings. Heating energy use during peak winter months dropped by as much as 75–80%, exceeding initial performance expectations. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 20%, supporting long-term sustainability goals.
Financially, the project delivered strong returns. With available incentives covering a significant portion of the cost, the upfront investment was dramatically reduced, resulting in a simple payback period of under two years. This transformed what could have been a major capital expense into a highly efficient and cost-effective upgrade.
Beyond savings, the retrofit improved overall building performance—eliminating the need for standalone cooling units, increasing system efficiency, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
