Senior Mechanical Engineer
Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities can be divided into three parts: inside sales support, project management/coordination and mechanical engineering design. Ideally, the candidate will spend most of their time working on mechanical engineering and energy management projects, either in design or coordination. The candidate will also be responsible for performing energy audits on multi-residential, commercial, MASH and industrial facilities. They will also support the sales team with technical support for development of quotations. Candidates without a strong HVAC experience are not recommended to apply. The candidate needs to be highly motivated, self-driven and able to work in a fast paced, client satisfaction driven environment. The candidate is expected to act as the engineering department lead, which could lead to a promotion to Engineering Manager, and supervise all engineering staff and workload over time. The following are a further list of job responsibilities:
o Work from 8am to 5pm daily, and longer if needed, solely on Mann Engineering activities
o Take responsibility for whole engineering department (3+ engineers), including scheduling work load, ensuring all deliverables are of the highest quality, providing training, ensuring all deliverables are on time and on budget.
o Assist with available projects for tender and attend tender site meetings to for site takeoff information. Organization and attention to detail are important skills.
o Assist the sales team with proposal and sales budget development, including estimating. Critical and creative thinking are important skills. Must be able to go to a site and get enough details to produce a preliminary design and budget.
o Develop energy and cost saving scenarios for clients based on a proposed solution. Will develop a working knowledge of incentive programs.
o Provide technical assistance to the sales team as needed.
o Perform Mechanical Engineering design work in support of projects, proposals, feasibility studies and other engineering reports. Expected to act as lead engineer on a project and not require any supervision or assistance as far as technical nature is concerned.
o Engineer, develop and stamp project drawings and specifications, project specific reports. Work to improve existing engineering standards and develop new standards in design and specification when needed. Projects range from boiler retrofits, chiller retrofits, plumbing, fire protection (sprinkler), building automation systems, lighting retrofits, water retrofits, etc.
o Act as engineering project manager, supervising contractors and working with clients to ensure 100% project completion and client satisfaction. Includes performing quality control inspections, deficiency reports and site instructions.
o Coordinate engineering work loads and tasks with electrical engineers, structural engineers, architects, etc.
o Regularly Perform drafting (AutoCAD), site takeoff, equipment selection, client coordination. Professionalism dealing with clients is a key quality.
o Perform energy audits on multi-residential buildings, commercial, MASH and industrial facilities. Attention to detail and organizational skills will be crucial. Must think critically to analyze the energy conservation measures.
o Equipment selection, assisting with equipment purchasing.
o Regularly function as support to Construction Manager / Project Manager on projects.
o Occasionally provide coverage for other Mechanical Engineering staff when required.
o Coordinate work, equipment delivery, material usage and personnel time with subcontractors and clients. Not a primary function, but a valuable team member should be able to assist with this.
o Maintain and organize project files, perform necessary administrative related work. Strong organizational skills are necessary.
Qualifications and Required Experience
o A Bachelors Degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university
o P.Eng for minimum 5 years (in Ontario or other)
o 5+ years with intensive HVAC experience (plumbing, heating systems, cooling systems, sprinkler/fire protection, etc)
o Very strong oral and written communication skills required
o Strong work ethic, organizational and time management skills; Ability to meet deadlines.
o Strong interpersonal, customer service and negotiating skills
o General knowledge of the construction industry is an asset.
o Highly motivated, self-driven and able to work in a fast paced, client satisfaction driven environment
o Excellent client satisfaction track record
o Uninhibited ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, push, pull, reach, and grasp.
o Periodic exposure to outdoor weather, shop and job site conditions.
o Candidate should have their own vehicle and a valid drivers license.
o AutoCAD proficiency is required.
o Knowledge of Carrier HAP, eQuest, RETScreen, pump selection software, heat exchanger selection software or other heat loss modeling or energy efficiency calculation tools and software are necessary.
o Understanding of departmental and client procedures and requirements related to Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
o Strong Mechanical Engineering design and calculation skills in the areas of statics, kinematics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and related physical sciences. Necessary.
o Excellent knowledge and proficiency with ASHRAE, ASME, SMACNA, ANSI, NFPA, Ontario Building Code, National Building Code, TSSA, ESA, API, CSA B149, CSA B52 and other accepted industry Codes and Standards. Necessary to have comprehensive experience and understanding of the requirements of most of these.
o Computer proficiency in MS Windows, Office (including Word and Excel) and e-mail.
